Backstreet Surveillance Highlights Growing Security Risks for Logistics and Transportation Businesses

by Binarynewsnetwork
  • Company points to rising cargo theft losses as transportation and logistics firms face increasingly costly security threats.

Utah, USA, Sep 17, 2026, ZEXPRWIRE — Backstreet Surveillance is drawing attention to growing security risks facing transportation, logistics, and distribution businesses as cargo theft continues to create major losses across North America.

The FBI warned the transportation and logistics industry in June that cargo theft schemes are becoming more sophisticated. Estimated losses across the United States and Canada reached nearly $725 million in 2025, a 60% increase from the previous year, while confirmed cargo theft incidents rose 18%.

More recent figures show that the financial impact remains significant. CargoNet recorded an estimated $304.6 million in cargo theft losses during the second quarter of 2026 alone, more than double the estimated losses recorded during the same quarter in 2025.

For Backstreet Surveillance, the figures highlight why logistics companies need to think about security across more than just warehouses.

“Transportation businesses have valuable assets moving through loading areas, yards, parking areas and distribution facilities every day,” said CEO Scott McQuarrie. “That creates several points where visibility becomes important.”

Cargo Theft Is Becoming More Costly

While physical theft remains a concern, cargo crime has also become more organised and complex. The FBI has warned that criminal groups are increasingly using cyber-enabled tactics and fraudulent credentials to target high-value shipments.

That means companies may need to think about physical surveillance as one part of a broader security strategy. For warehouses and distribution properties, cameras can help provide visibility around loading docks, entrances, storage areas and vehicle access points.

Backstreet Surveillance works with technologies including high-definition cameras, remote monitoring, low-light imaging and licence plate recognition.

Licence plate recognition can be particularly relevant in environments where businesses need a clearer record of vehicles entering and leaving a property.

Vehicle Activity Is Becoming More Important to Monitor

Logistics facilities can see a constant flow of trucks, employees, contractors and delivery vehicles. Knowing that a vehicle entered a property may not always provide enough information after an incident. Businesses may also need details such as the licence plate, time of arrival or direction of travel.

This is where specialised surveillance tools can provide more useful information than a basic wide-angle view.

“Different cameras have different jobs,” McQuarrie said. “If vehicle identification matters, the system needs to be designed around capturing that information.”

Remote access can also allow authorised managers to check locations when they are away from the facility, providing greater visibility across multiple warehouses, yards or distribution properties.

Security Challenges Do Not End at the Warehouse Door

Some of the most difficult areas to monitor are outside the building itself. Truck yards, parking areas, storage lots and loading zones can cover large spaces and may remain active outside normal office hours.

Low-light camera performance can become especially important in those environments, where activity continues overnight.

Mobile surveillance trailers can provide another option for properties that need additional coverage without permanent infrastructure.

Backstreet Surveillance says the ability to adapt security coverage can be valuable when inventory levels, parking arrangements or operating areas change.

Rising Losses Put More Attention on Prevention

CargoNet reported 677 cargo theft incidents during the second quarter of 2026. Although that represented a decline in the number of incidents compared with the previous year, estimated losses more than doubled, reflecting the impact of increasingly high-value thefts.

For transportation and logistics businesses, those figures make the financial stakes harder to ignore.

Backstreet Surveillance recommends looking at where valuable goods and vehicles spend time throughout an operation and identifying areas where greater visibility could help.

The goal is not simply to record more footage. It is to make sure businesses can access useful information when something happens.

As cargo theft tactics continue to change, surveillance technology is becoming one of several tools companies can use to better understand activity around their facilities and assets.
